Practical Ideas to Stretch Your Grocery Dollars

Of course, people like the idea of saving money on their purchases. But being able to save money on groceries is a benefit for almost every household budget. And you don’t have to go to extremes to do it. With simple shopping strategies, you can help make your grocery hauls more affordable.
Plan Before Shopping
Shopping for groceries is such a normal part of life, you could almost sleepwalk right through it. Well, not actually sleepwalk. But we often get into the habit of grabbing what looks good enough to eat, placing it into a cart, paying for it, and out of the store we go. What if we put more thought into what we’re buying before we even make it to the store?
A practical idea is to come to the store prepared with a grocery shopping list. It will help reduce those impulse buys because you’ll have a structured plan. First, check your fridge, freezer, and the back of those cabinets for useable items. Next, ask yourself if you can create meals from what you already have. Then, make a list of what you need to make those foods or search the web for low-cost meals your family wouldn’t mind having for leftovers.
Shop the Sales
Once you know what you want to buy, you’ll need to find out if the items fit into your grocery budget. Don’t have a food budget? Now is a great time to figure one out. Almost everything is on the internet or an app these days, so pricing out items is relatively easy – though it can be time consuming. However, since you have a grocery list, you can look through pricing, sales, flyers, and weekly promotions to try to get the best deals. Remember, a shopping deal is only good if you actually need it. Buying something just because it’s on sale, a deal does not make.
Pick Affordable Meals
Budget-friendly food options could help you save money, and they don’t have to be boring. Try building your meals around inexpensive pantry staples. You can create delicious foods on a budget with tasty foundations of rice, pasta, or beans. Don’t forget healthy and filling items like frozen or canned veggies. Sauces and seasonings can make a world of difference. Yummy desserts can come together quickly and economically with canned fruits and a store brand cake mix. Double up your portions for leftovers or, with a few additions, you can whip up something different. Simple dinners like spaghetti or tacos can give you the protein you need while sneaking in those veggies, and they taste just as good the next day.
Saving, Not Wasting
It’s always a sad day when meats or fresh produce go past their expirations and need to be tossed. Ugh, the waste - not just the loss of food, but the wasted money. By properly storing food in the refrigerator or carefully freezing it in a sealed bag, you can help reduce the losses. When preparing meals, try to use the older ingredients, proteins, and fruits and vegetables to get the most out of your purchased goods.
A Consumer with Purpose
You can shop smart on a budget and still cook good, tasty food. Create a shopping list, shop your kitchen first, find budget-friendly meal ideas, shop and cook with intention, and make sure to store food to reduce waste. Now your meals will taste even better because you know you stretched your dollars to the max.
