Cash Money donates $10,000 to Black Mental Health Canada

As Cash Money recognizes Black History Month throughout the company, we wanted to give back to the Black community in a meaningful way. Our Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Council has donated $10,000 to the Black Mental Health Canada.

Mental Health and the Black Community

In Canada, mental health needs have increased significantly especially during the pandemic. While many face considerable challenges and losses, the impact has hit Black communities disproportionately, which is a real issue according to Alice Wiafe with Black Mental Health Canada.

Why the disparity?

Black Mental Health Canada attributes part of the problem to large cultural barriers. Some Black communities have stigmas, varied beliefs, and limited access to mental health services. There are also not enough culturally sensitive mental health providers available.

"Mental health has definitely been top-of-mind over the last year," said Stacy Baird, Cash Money Regional Director. "We wanted to partner with Black Mental Health Canada to help raise awareness and provide needed services for Black Canadians of all ages."

The mission of Black Mental Health Canada is to facilitate access to affordable, culturally safe, and affirming mental health services to the Black community. They also provide referrals for individuals and subsidize treatment.

"Black Mental Health Canada's vision aligns with our vision – to create an equitable, respectful, and compassionate society – we must all do our part," remarked Jillian Slagter, Chief Human Resources Officer.
